AEO vs SEO: what actually changes.
Less than the name suggests. Nearly every input is the same input. What changes is the shape of the answer — and that changes what it costs to come second.
Most of “AEO” is SEO done properly.
the honest versionA correct profile. Pages that answer the question instead of mentioning it. The same name, address and phone wherever you appear. Reviews, and replies to them. Facts written so a machine cannot misread them.
That list is answer-engine optimisation. It is also just competent search work, and it was competent search work before anyone needed a second acronym. Which is why we do not sell it separately — charging twice for one body of work is the main thing the new name has been useful for.
What genuinely differs.
side by side| A search result | An AI answer | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | Ten links, and you choose | Usually one name, and no choice |
| Coming second | Still gets clicked | Often not mentioned at all |
| How it is built | Pages ranked against each other | Facts gathered and restated |
| What you can measure | Position, by phrase and by place | Nothing reliable |
| What moves it | A profile, pages, listings, reviews | A profile, pages, listings, reviews |
Four rows differ. The last one — the only one you can act on — is the same sentence twice.
The one thing that is genuinely new.
if you read one sectionA search result links to you. An AI answer restates you. That is the whole difference, and everything else follows from it.
A link can afford ambiguity, because the reader lands on your page and works it out. A restatement cannot. If your hours are written as “available around the clock”, that is a sentence; Mo-Su 00:00-24:00 is a fact. Anything a machine has to interpret is something it can get wrong, or skip.
So the weight shifts toward writing the facts down unambiguously. Not new work — the same work, with a higher penalty for leaving it vague.
What does not change.
keep your money- You do not need a second content strategy The page that answers a real question is the page that works in both.
- You do not need to write for robots Clear writing and correct structured data. Those are the same thing an editor would ask for.
- You do not need a separate budget line It is one body of work. We price it as one, at one monthly number, with the website included.
- You do not get a ranking report for it There is no reliable way to sample an AI answer at scale. We report what is real: position by location, listings, and the month’s work.
If someone quotes you separately for answer-engine work, ask which of these they are doing twice.
Questions.
faqIs AEO replacing SEO?
No. An assistant that looks something up mid-answer is searching the web, so being findable in search is what makes you reachable in an answer. The two are the same project viewed from different ends.
Should I pay separately for answer engine optimization?
We do not think so. Nearly every input is an input to ordinary search visibility — the profile, the pages, the listings, the reviews, the structured data. We price it as one body of work at $1,500 a month, with the website and landing pages included.
Does AEO need different content?
Not different, clearer. A page that answers a specific question works in both places. What matters more is that facts are written unambiguously, because an answer restates them rather than linking to them.
Can you measure AI visibility?
Not honestly. The answer changes by phrasing, by account and by day, and there is no way to sample it at a scale that would make a monthly figure mean anything. We track keyword position by location, every directory listing and whether its details agree, and each item of work with the date it was done.
What is the actual difference, in one sentence?
A search result links to you and an AI answer restates you — so ambiguity you could get away with before now costs you the mention.
